Knock Off Spinner Tool History.
My first 1966 un-restored Lotus Elan 1966 Coupe.
Not knowing much about my first Lotus Elan until I was driving around Lake Tahoe, at a West Coast Lotus event, when a wheel came loose and I did’t have a hammer with Me. I had to use a 2x4 block of wood found at a construction site and a bolder to tighten the spinner.
Here is my restored Lotus Elan Coupe. There had to be a better way than beating my car with a hammer. My first attempt to eliminate the need to use a hammer, I purchased the only tool I could find, (pictured) that used a breaker bar and It bent the tips and failed.
I have a museum wall of failures with different pressed shapes and protective coverings and finally created a tool that worked.
My Lotus came with a three ear spinner (shown) and the early Lotus Elan 26R racing type spinners came with a hollow center.
Standard Elan spinner.
The 26R racing spinner.
2 eared tools
I made the tools for myself and other friends. Then other Lotus guys wanted a tool for the Lotus Elites with a 2 ear type spinner.
I ended up with a 2 ear 42 sizes tool and a larger 52 size for Jaguars.
I then made a tool to fit the Lotus Elan 26R racing type spinners with a hallow center. They were leather wrapped and bolted on.
Jay Leno was restoring two Lotus Elans, one was for the 26R racing hollow type spinners. He wanted both spinner tools to try.
Jay surprised me on how well the Lotus tools worked. He did a video on the Lotus Elan 26R Lotus tool on how it fit his larger Shelby Cobra three eared spinner perfectly. The Lotus hubs and the ear angles fit both spinners. The Lotus spinners are smaller but the hub size and the ear angles fit both cars.
California fires, years ago, destroyed all of our equipment and jigs and was way to expensive to replace the steel versions. I designed an Aluminum CNC version for all knock off removal tool kits.
These tool kits have been shipped worldwide for about 15 years.
