Benefits & Instructions without using a hammer
This tool kit fits Carroll Shelby's three eared Halibrand type spinners. They fit Cobra, GT40, Mustang, Daytona coupe and many more that use that type of spinner.
This Cobra Kit can reach into the deepest wheels and grips all 3 ears, equally spreading the UNDO removal force without damaging the spinners.
The Cobra / GT40 Kits Contain:
A polished Aluminum tool that is leather wrapped to protect any metal to metal contact to the spinner. The tool is engraved with left and right sided UNDO directional arrows, a 46mm high impact socket, a storage carrying bag and a wheel chock to block the tires from spinning on the floor. when using a breaker bar's leverage.
Torque Settings: In a Lotus Elan's manual has the only torque setting I've been able to find, showing 200 to 220 ft/lbs. of torque. All other sources only recommend using a lead hammer. The Lotus hubs are about the same as Cobra's Hub sizes.
A local shop owner, who has always used a hammer to UNDO his spinners using three good whacks, does It. We tested 3 whacks method using our tool with a breaker bar. He hit within 3 to 4 pounds of 210 each time. He did say by using my tool with a breaker bar, the added leverage causes the wheel to spin on the floor. He suggested blocking the wheels.
The standard accepted Hammer removal method.
Is to UNDO the spinner while the car is still on the floor with a hammer, jack the car up, remove the spinner and the wheel, replace the new tire and finger tight the spinner and let the wheel back down, and tighten with a hammer, for a secured spinner to the wheel.
The best way to change a tire without a hammer:
Use my wheel chock by simply jacking the car up just so the tire just turns. Place the chock on one side of the tire to UNDO and move the chock to he other side of the tire to tighten, then let the jack back down for a fully secured spinner to the wheel without using a hammer.
Removing Cobra spinners:
Facts about what type of breaker bar to use.
When using an internal type breaker bar with a 1/2" drive, it could fail if it takes more than 350 to 400 ft/lbs of torque to UNDO the spinner. An External breaker bar type with a 3/4"drive, can handle up to 1,200 ft/lbs. And should remove the most stubborn spinners.
Socket Choices that come In the Kits
A socket with a 1/2" drive should work on the standard spinners as long as they are not over tighten or seized.
Sockets with 1/2 inch drives.
Same sockets with 3/4 inch drives
There are different size spinners that don't fit
Bottom is to flat 2 1/4"
3 1/2" To tall to fit
True Cobra measure 2 3/4"
